Earthquake Sparks Panic in Southern Cyprus

A moderate 5.2 earthquake that struck about 20 kilometres off the coast of Paphos around 11:30 a.m. caused panic across Southern Cyprus. Reports indicated that residents in Paphos rushed into the streets in fear.

Citing data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), Greek Cypriot media reported varying magnitudes for the quake, ranging between 5.2 and 5.7 on the Richter scale. The tremor occurred at a depth of 23.7 kilometres, approximately 20 kilometres from Paphos, and was followed by aftershocks, the strongest measuring 4.7. Aftershocks of 3.5, 3.6, 4.7 and 2.3 in magnitude were recorded within minutes of the main quake.

The quake was felt across Southern Cyprus. In Paphos, many people reportedly fled their homes in panic, while two buildings in the Egkomi district of Nicosia were evacuated for safety reasons. Telephone lines were also reported to have been disrupted.
