Haravgi reported that a group of MEPs, including Greek Cypriot representatives, spoke at the Brussels session on Wednesday, marking the TRNC’s anniversary and addressing the Cyprus issue.

According to the report, Denmark’s Minister for European Affairs, Marie Bjerre, speaking on behalf of the European Council, said that “Turkey must commit to a peaceful solution and make a serious contribution,” while EU Commission Vice President Raffaele Fitto claimed that “the de facto division of Cyprus is a serious concern for the EU, that only the Republic of Cyprus is recognized, and that the solution for Cyprus should be reunification of the island.”

French MEP Sandro Gozi asserted that “the only legal state on the island is the Republic of Cyprus” and argued that “Turkey must comply with international law and UN resolutions.”

Dutch MEP Reinier van Lanschot stated that “as long as Cyprus remains divided, the EU can never truly be united,” adding that “Erhürman’s election victory opens a small window of hope.”

The newspaper also highlighted speeches by Greek Cypriot MEPs Lukas Furlas (DISY), Yorgos Yeorgiu (AKEL), Kostas Mavridis (DIKO), and Fidias Panayotu (Independent), who criticized the EU’s stance and its failure to impose sanctions on Turkey.
