Erhürman Sends Famagusta Theology College Protocol to Constitutional Court for Review
Turkish Cypriot President Tufan Erhürman has referred the protocol concerning the construction of the Famagusta Theology College to the Constitutional Court to obtain an opinion on its compatibility with the Constitution before it is published. The move aims to prevent further controversy surrounding the project.
Erhürman noted that bringing the protocol to Parliament two years after it was signed could create issues regarding “state seriousness and international credibility.”
In his statement, the president said that although the Turkish Cypriot community has no problem with secularism or freedom of religion and conscience in terms of its culture and way of life, the issue continues to surface and carries the risk of causing baseless divisions within society.
Erhürman also recalled that similar debates had previously arisen over school regulations and were resolved through a Constitutional Court ruling.
