According to Fileleftheros, which ran the story under the headline “Two Invitations to Ankara,” both Christodoulides and Metsola stressed that the Republic of Cyprus’s upcoming assumption of the EU Council Presidency will not hinder efforts on the Cyprus issue but instead strengthen them.

Metsola said the presidency would serve as an incentive for progress, while Christodoulides noted that he plans to invite Erdoğan and Fidan to join preparatory work for EU summits during the presidency.

One month before the Republic of Cyprus takes over the rotating EU Council Presidency, Christodoulides and Metsola hosted a meeting between the Cabinet and political groups from the European Parliament.

Following the meeting, Metsola told reporters that “Cyprus can rely on Europe” and that the Cyprus problem is a shared European concern. She reiterated that the European Parliament will continue supporting a bizonal, bicommunal federation based on UN resolutions and EU principles.

The newspaper reported that Christodoulides did not directly address the Cyprus issue during his remarks but sent messages to Turkey instead. He emphasised that Turkey remains an EU candidate country and that the presidency will naturally involve issues related to Turkey.

Christodoulides said he has invited Erdoğan to the informal European Council meeting scheduled to take place in Cyprus on 23–24 April 2026, and that he is also prepared to invite Fidan to the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers to be held during the same period. He added that whether they attend is a matter for Turkey to decide.

Christodoulides outlined two main priorities for the Republic of Cyprus during its presidency: strengthening the EU’s strategic autonomy and deepening the Union’s engagement with the geopolitically significant Eastern Mediterranean region.

Metsola said she values Christodoulides’s contributions to European and regional issues, noting that Cyprus will assume the presidency at a time of rapid developments and rising public expectations. She added that the European Council will remain a partner and ally in the steps ahead.
