Barrack stressed that the United States aims to act as a bridge linking Greece and Turkey in a new regional framework, with Cyprus playing a critical role in ensuring energy security and regional stability. Analysts noted that while the US seeks engagement, its direct intervention in long-standing disputes is likely to remain limited.

Greek Cypriot daily Politis highlighted Barrack’s statements, noting the focus on Cyprus alongside US efforts to connect Greece and Turkey in a new regional order. Analysts told the paper that if the US seeks to drive significant changes in the region through cooperation between long-time rivals, Cyprus must be prepared, though current US strategy appears largely concentrated on energy corridors.

The analysis emphasized that Greece and Turkey occupy critical junctions in these corridors, making Cyprus an important factor in potential solutions. However, experts also indicated that the likelihood of the US taking a strong, direct role in resolving long-standing regional disputes remains low.

In his interview with Kathimerini, Barrack indicated that the US aims to serve as a bridge between Greece and Turkey while also seeking to “heal the abscess” related to Cyprus.

International relations expert James Ker-Lindsay told the newspaper that although many hope for improved Greece-Turkey relations and a resolution to the Cyprus issue, doubts remain over whether the US approach will succeed where past efforts have failed. Energy analyst Charles Ellinas highlighted the US’s active presence at the recent “P-TEC” energy symposium in Athens, suggesting Washington’s continued strategic interest in the region.

Meanwhile, Anna Kukkidi Prokopiu, head of the think tank Politia, noted that while Cyprus is not an immediate crisis point, it remains a potential flashpoint in a wider regional context.
