Harmancı: All Streams Are at Overflow Level; Residents Should Follow Municipal Warnings

Nicosia Turkish Municipality (LTB) Mayor Mehmet Harmancı warned that the overflow of the Kanlıköy pond and Gönyeli Dam, alongside rising water levels in streams flowing from the South, poses potential risks. He noted that the Levent Primary School–Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Avenue–College route remains closed because it falls below the stream level, while all other roads are open to traffic. Harmancı added that coordination with the Gönyeli–Alayköy Municipality is ongoing.

He made the remarks during his appearance on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s morning news programme hosted by Canan Onurer.

Providing the latest updates on the situation, Harmancı stressed that there is no critical emergency in Nicosia at this stage but cautioned that the overflow of the Kanlıköy pond, the overflow at Gönyeli Dam and the rising levels of streams coming from the South could lead to complications.

He said the main road from Levent Primary School through Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu Avenue to the College remains closed because it sits below the stream bed. Harmancı added that water levels across all streams are at critical levels and cannot yet be reduced. He emphasised that all routes other than this area remain open and that the municipality is in constant contact with the Gönyeli–Alayköy Municipality.

Harmancı urged all residents to follow the announcements issued by the Municipality and warned those living near stream beds to exercise heightened caution.

Harmancı’s Midday Update: Stream Overflow; One-Day Administrative Leave Declared in the Area

In a statement issued later in the day, LTB Mayor Mehmet Harmancı said the stream near Taşkınköy Dereli Street had overflowed, but there was no immediate threat to the area.

He reported that water levels in the streams continue to rise, noting that water flowing from the Gönyeli Dam is now passing through the hospital grounds, with the situation being closely monitored.

Harmancı added that Civil Defence authorities had been informed and announced that Levent College and Levent Primary School had opted to declare a one-day administrative leave as a precaution.
