Dinçyürek and Oğuz said all institutions remain on alert around the clock, with drainage and protective works reinforced to prevent any problems at the hospital.

Health Minister Dr Hakan Dinçyürek, Interior Minister Dursun Oğuz, Agriculture and Natural Resources Minister Hüseyin Çavuş, and Civil Defence Organisation Head Hakan Balaban visited the area to assess the ongoing work in response to the flood risk around Nicosia State Hospital.

Dinçyürek said they have been engaged in an intensive effort to counter new risks brought by the heavy rains that intensified yesterday. The Gönyeli Dam reached full capacity in the evening, sending overflowing water towards Nicosia and reviving concerns about past flooding incidents at Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital.

The minister said they are working in full coordination with the Civil Defence Organisation, the Interior Ministry, the Agriculture Ministry, the district governor’s office and local authorities to ensure that no overflow or flooding occurs at Nicosia State Hospital. He noted that forecasts indicate heavy rainfall could continue through the night and into tomorrow.

Dinçyürek said the banks of the previously opened channel have been reinforced and efforts are focused on accelerating drainage to move water away from the area. Protective measures have also been completed for devices, service units and patient intake areas located in the hospital’s basement.

“There are no issues at the moment,” Dinçyürek said, adding that all institutions are acting in full coordination to prevent any risk from developing.

He thanked the Civil Defence Organisation, the Interior Ministry, the Labour Ministry, the district governor’s office and local administrations for their support, stressing that they have established strong and organised precautions against any potential problems.

The minister also issued a public call, urging residents to avoid going outdoors unless necessary over the next few days of severe weather, and to take all possible personal safety measures in their homes and neighbourhoods.
