CTP Candidate Sami Özuslu Wins By-Election

The Turkish Cypriot community participated in parliamentary and local by-elections yesterday, with over 210,000 registered voters casting their ballots in a total of 713 polling stations across the region.

The voting process ran from 8:00 to 18:00, with each polling station manned by three staff members. The Yenicami neighborhood in Lefkoşa was the only area eligible to vote for the local muhtar.
In the parliamentary by-election, which arose due to the resignation of former HP leader Kudret Özersay, six political parties and seven independent candidates competed for a single vacant seat in Lefkoşa. Additionally, four candidates ran for the seat of Yenicami muhtar, left vacant following the death of the former muhtar.
The vote counting for the parliamentary and local by-elections has been completed, and Sami Özuslu, the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) parliamentary candidate, emerged victorious, receiving 26,288 votes, or 43.73% of the total vote count. The National Unity Party (UBP) parliamentary candidate, Ali Başman, came in second with 22,842 votes.
The successful election of Özuslu fills a long-standing vacancy in Northern Cyprus's parliament, providing the region with a new representative. With the successful completion of the parliamentary and local by-elections, the Northern Cypriot community can look forward to continuing progress and development.
