Ersin Tatar Reveals TRNC Population: Official Population is 410,000
President Ersin Tatar announced in an interview in the UK that the official population of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is 410,000.
Responding to the question "Is the Turkish Cypriot community diminishing?" posed by MYK News London Representative Mihriban Safa durng last week's London visit, Tatar stated:
"In such significant national matters, of course, when we look at the community structure, there may be some changes over time... When we look at the issue, we have our brothers and sisters who came and settled after 1974. After living there for 20-25 years, they became parents and grandparents. Yes, we have to grant them citizenship. We have given it, and we continue to give it. Therefore, our current official population is 410,000."
Tatar also pointed out that there are many Turkish Cypriots in countries such as the UK, Austria, and the Republic of Turkey who are not citizens. The last census in the TRNC was took place in 2011. According to the 2011 census, TRNC population was 284.000.
