Angels' City Illuminated with Torches: Thousands Walk for Justice in Famagusta

Thousands of people walked in Famagusta with torches and the slogan "Shine a Light on Justice" to demand justice for the "Champion Angels" and to insist on the prosecution of earthquake culprits for "possible intent."

The walk took place in support of the upcoming trial in Adıyaman related to the Isias Hotel, which collapsed during the February 6 earthquake, claiming the lives of 35 individuals from the TRNC and a total of 72 people.

The walk was organized by the "Champion Angels' Association," with participants including families, President Ersin Tatar, ministers, members of parliament, mayors, political party leaders and representatives, students, and citizens from various regions. Starting in front of the Gazimağusa Turkish Maarif College, the walk concluded at the Victory Monument, a symbol of Famagusta. During the demonstration, torches spelled out "JUSTICE." Legal professionals participated in the walk wearing their robes, and students from Gazimağusa Turkish Maarif College carried a banner that read "Isias is Our Common Cause."

At the end of the walk, torches carried for the Champion Angels were placed around the Victory Monument.

Speeches and Messages:

  • Ruşen Karakaya, President of the Champion Angels' Association: Ruşen Karakaya stated, "The real struggle starts now," emphasizing their efforts to shed light on justice and to appeal to the justice of the Republic of Turkey for the culprits to be tried for "possible intent." He underlined their fight to prove the truth, acknowledged by expert reports and known by everyone, with the rule of law. Karakaya mentioned the 15-day period for the acceptance or return of the shared indictment, noting that they organized the walk to address the Turkish Republic's justice. He concluded by stating, "If necessary, we will continue this fight anywhere in the world until justice is served, even until our last breath."

  • Ersin Tatar, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC): President Tatar expressed his support for the walk and the cause of justice for the Champion Angels. He emphasized the need for a fair trial and for those responsible to face the consequences of their actions.

  • Nazım Çavuşoğlu, Minister of National Education and Culture: Minister Çavuşoğlu stressed the importance of justice and the right to life. He stated that the pain of the Champion Angels' families was shared by the entire community and expressed solidarity with their cause.

  • Hasan Esendağlı, President of the Cyprus Turkish Bar Association: Esendağlı emphasized the pursuit of justice and the demand for accountability for the Isias Hotel tragedy. He mentioned the importance of legal processes and the need for justice to prevail.

The speeches aimed to unite the community in seeking justice for the victims and holding those responsible accountable. The messages conveyed a commitment to continued efforts until justice is served.
