In an interview with the Greek newspaper Kathimerini ahead of his planned visit to Athens on December 7th, Erdoğan addressed questions regarding Turkish-Greek relations.

Erdoğan began by emphasizing that Turkey and Greece are neighbors, sharing the same geography, sea, and air. Referring to his recent statements about a "new page" and a "win-win formula" in Turkish-Greek relations, Erdoğan stated:

"We share the same geography, the same sea, and the same air. We are intertwined by our history. There are many issues between us that we have not yet been able to resolve, and we are aware of that as two countries. However, whether these issues will lead to tension, disagreements between our governments and our peoples, is in our hands. In this sense, I spoke about a 'new page' and the 'win-win' principle in our relations. The 'win-win' understanding is already at the core of Turkey's approach to international relations and diplomacy."

Erdoğan emphasized the importance of addressing conflicts through dialogue and reaching common ground, stating that both Turkey and Greece have been successful in shaping their relations in line with this understanding in recent times.

Highlighting the revival of bilateral mechanisms that had not been operational for a long time, Erdoğan stated:

"Our dialogue channels are open and functioning at every level. We have intensive reciprocal visits. We have the will to develop our cooperation in many important areas for our countries and our region based on mutual trust. Now, both sides need to strengthen, institutionalize, and advance this understanding. I believe Mr. [Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos] Mitsotakis shares the same will."

Erdoğan expressed that the common intention would be recorded in a joint declaration on friendly relations and good neighborliness, planned to be signed during his visit to Athens on December 7th.

He added: "We have never viewed Greece, our neighbor, as an enemy or adversary. Like all countries, we need friends, not enemies. As I often say, we have no problems with our neighbors that cannot be overcome. I think that in recent times, Greece has reviewed its perspective towards us, understanding that we are a nation that never refuses the extended hand of friendship, just as we respond without hesitation to those who threaten the security of our people, our territorial integrity, and our national interests."

Erdoğan stated that he believes Mitsotakis understands this and sincerely desires to overcome the problems between Turkey and Greece and advance relations. He added: "Mitsotakis is pleased to observe a similar approach in Turkey. I will say the following to Mr. Mitsotakis: Kyriakos, my friend, as long as you do not threaten us, we do not threaten you either. Let's strengthen the trust between our two countries. Let's increase bilateral cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, transportation, energy, health, technology, education, and youth. Let's show the necessary care and attention to the historical and cultural assets in our countries mutually. Whether it's issues in the Aegean, joint efforts against irregular migration, ongoing issues of the Turkish minority in Greece, there is no problem that we cannot solve through dialogue on the basis of mutual goodwill."

Erdoğan noted that both countries had strong government support in the recent elections, providing a solid basis for constructive steps.

He stated: "Our support is strong enough to take powerful and constructive steps. As the saying goes, we will take the wagon out of the mud. We will continue on our way. It is this powerful support that gives us the confidence to take decisive steps for peace in the Aegean and the Mediterranean."

Erdoğan emphasized that problems could be resolved through dialogue and goodwill, saying:

"Our determination to solve problems will be decisive here. Our determination is strong. Looking at our efforts and ability to distance ourselves from conflicts for the resolution of disputes in our surroundings, you can see Turkey's understanding and potential to eliminate problems peacefully. We have proven this many times. Western media is trying to distort my words in this regard."

Regarding energy resources in the Eastern Mediterranean, Erdoğan pointed out the rich natural resources in the region and the increasing importance of ensuring energy security in the current international context. He mentioned Turkey's proposal for comprehensive conferences on Eastern Mediterranean opportunities twice in the past and emphasized the need for joint efforts in the region.

He said: "Given that other countries in the region are moving in this direction, why shouldn't the two sides on the island of Cyprus cooperate? There are many issues we can collaborate on in the Aegean as well. Everything is for the peace and prosperity of our peoples and future generations."

Erdoğan concluded the interview by discussing Turkey
