Fikri Toros: The Primary Expectations of the Turkish Cypriot Community Must Be Safeguarded

Fikri Toros, the Secretary of Foreign Relations for the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), stated in a speech at the European Parliament during the "Turkish Cypriots and the EU - Perspectives on the Reunification of Cyprus" panel that "the primary expectations of the Turkish Cypriot community must be safeguarded."

Toros emphasized the need to return to the only legitimate ground, the UN ground, to overcome the deadlock in the Cyprus peace-building process without further delay.
Toros highlighted that for the establishment of lasting peace and genuine democracy in the common homeland, it is essential not to forget the necessity of reunification and preserving integrity. He stated, "Our Cyprus is too small to be divided, yet large enough to peacefully accommodate all communities within."
In his speech, Fikri Toros addressed the deadlock in the Cyprus peace process, emphasizing the need to return to the UN ground. He highlighted the deepening division in Cyprus and stressed the urgency of reunification under a federal umbrella for lasting peace and genuine democracy. He argued for the importance of addressing international dimensions of the Cyprus issue, urged a return to official negotiations, and emphasized the role of the UN Secretary-General. Toros also discussed recent developments in the region, such as the agreement between Lebanon and Israel, and proposed applying a similar approach to resolve maritime disputes in the Eastern Mediterranean.

He stressed the importance of upholding the fundamental values of the EU, political equality, a federal solution, and principles like human rights and sustainability.
Toros addressed the impact of the Cyprus issue on Turkey-EU relations, advocating for the EU's support for Turkey's full membership. He also discussed the human rights concerns related to citizenship rights for children born in mixed marriages and called for their prompt resolution.
In conclusion, Toros urged the continuation of the efforts by the EU Ad-Hoc Committee under the UN umbrella, emphasized the importance of overcoming divisive rhetoric, and reminded that reunification is essential for lasting peace on the island.
