Hasipoglu Addresses Council of Europe: Cyprus Turkish Youth Doesn't Deserve Inhumane Embargoes

Oguzhan Hasipoglu, the General Secretary of the National Unity Party (UBP), spoke at the Committee Meetings of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly held in Paris, calling for the lifting of embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people. Hasipoglu emphasized, "The Cyprus Turkish youth doesn't deserve inhumane embargoes."

Participating in the agenda of the Culture, Science, Education, and Media Committee, which discussed the "impact of the Olympics on peace processes" and "whether sports independence serves the values of sports," Hasipoglu addressed the embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot youth. In a speech during the meeting, following a presentation by Italian Professor Luigi Melica, an expert in sports law, on the impact of the Olympics on the peace process, Hasipoglu urged the attendees not to remain silent on the unjust restrictions imposed on the youth.
"While everyone in this committee meeting agrees that politics should not be mixed with sports, I request that you do not remain silent on the unjust restrictions imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people, especially the youth. The Cyprus Turkish youth doesn't deserve inhumane embargoes," Hasipoglu stated.
Referring to the Annan Plan referendum held 19 years ago, Hasipoglu demanded the fulfillment of promises made and the lifting of embargoes. He criticized the European Union (EU) for applying double standards, despite promises made to the people who voted 'yes' in the referendum. Hasipoglu called on the Council to ensure the fulfillment of promises made through the committee and to open the way for Turkish Cypriot youth to participate in the Olympics, citing the principles outlined in the Olympic Constitution.
In his speech, Hasipoglu reminded the committee of the Olympic Constitution's clauses, stating, "Participating in sports activities is a human right. Every individual should have the possibility to engage in sports within the Olympic spirit without facing any discrimination. Dominated by the spirit of friendship, solidarity, and fair play, discrimination based on race, religion, politics, gender, or any other reason against any country or person is contrary to Olympic rules."
Hasipoglu expressed that Turkish Cypriot athletes are eager to participate in international competitions and tournaments. He assured that they would do their best to open this door for their athletes, and their efforts would extend to various platforms, including the Council of Europe and the parliament.
