Approval from Both Sides for Colombian Cuellar as Cyprus Representative on the Cyprus Issue

Reports in today's Greek Cypriot newspapers highlight that both the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides have approved the proposal for the appointment of Colombian Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar as the UN Secretary-General's representative on the Cyprus issue.

The Alithia newspaper, under the headline "Timeline with Representative - Turkish Cypriot Side Accepts with a 6-Month Condition," reported that both sides have agreed to the suggestion.
According to the statements made by the Greek Cypriot government yesterday, the importance lies in the appointment of the representative rather than the duration of their stay in Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriot side, on the other hand, reportedly set conditions, demanding a six-month term and no exploration of a common ground for federation regarding the matter.
Letimbiotis: The government spokesman, Konstantinos Letimbiotis, emphasized the exploration of perspectives to restart negotiations on the Cyprus problem within an agreed framework and in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. He stated that the Greek Cypriot side has approved the appointment of a specific person recommended by the UN Secretary-General as a representative to investigate these perspectives.
Reiterating the government's sincere political will and expressing readiness to resume negotiations for a sustainable and final solution to the Cyprus problem, Letimbiotis stated that they have a strong desire for the Cyprus problem to be resolved through a federal solution with political equality between the two communities.
When asked whether he could confirm the name that surfaced regarding the representative, Letimbiotis stated that they could not confirm anything yet and are waiting for the UN Secretary-General's announcement.
Responding to a question about the representative's duration in Cyprus, Letimbiotis emphasized that the crucial point is for the representative to start contacts as soon as possible to explore perspectives for the resumption of negotiations.
He expressed hope for the emergence of sincere political will and the anticipation that this period will not be too long, allowing negotiations to start as soon as possible.
Ertugruloglu's Statement: The Alithia newspaper also reported on the statement made by Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu to the "Kibris Postasi" yesterday afternoon. According to the report, Ertugruloglu stated that the Turkish Cypriot side gave a positive response to the appointment of a representative by the UN Secretary-General, saying, "We responded positively to the representative issue, with the condition that there is no search for a common ground for federation. The appointment will be valid for 6 months."
The news on this issue has been covered with headlines such as "Positive Response from Both Sides for Maria Cuellar" and "Positive Response from the Turkish Cypriot Side" in various Greek Cypriot newspapers.
