HP Calls for Gradual Solution in Cyprus

Ahmet Tokatlıoğlu, a member of the Central Executive Committee of the People's Party (HP), argued that a gradual solution is possible in Cyprus, urging leaders to take steps.

In his statement on the solution to the Cyprus problem, Tokatlıoğlu noted that the extension of the French-German coal agreement after World War II to a confederal structure like the European Union is an indication that a step-by-step gradual solution is possible.
Tokatlıoğlu stated, "This historical example shows that a gradual solution is possible in Cyprus. However, the current situation in Cyprus has remained in the shadow of mainstream alternatives such as a federal solution or two separate states, and gradual approaches, which could be a real way out, have not been adequately considered. Turkey's recent call for cooperation in the field of natural gas in Turkish-Greek relations and specifically the Cyprus problem before a solution is promising."
He continued, "The comprehensive solution in Cyprus has become even more complex than in the past. However, the impact of domestic politics and issues of political sovereignty pose a significant obstacle to a gradual solution. The political rapprochement and confidence-building measures in Turkish-Greek relations show that a similar approach can be applied to the Cyprus problem. However, a plan and roadmap based on cooperation focused on the daily lives of the two communities are needed. This requires identifying areas where the two communities can collaborate and removing the concerns of the parties from the interim resolution process."
Calling on political leaders of both communities to take steps in this direction, Tokatlıoğlu said, "The solution to the problem depends not only on the decisions of political leaders but also on the perceptions and acceptances of the communities. Therefore, a gradual solution process should be shaped with the participation and support of both communities."
