Erhürman: The Vision You've Presented Doesn't Align with Today's Reality

On the 20th anniversary of the 2004 referendums, Erhürman recalled the intense discussions during that period and emphasized the importance of knowing and interpreting history correctly to shape the future accurately. Stressing the need for accurate evaluations regarding the referendums on April 24, Erhürman pointed out that the decision not to solve the Cyprus issue wouldn't hinder the full membership of the Republic of Cyprus in the European Union (EU) as stated in the decisions made during the 1999 Helsinki Summit.

Referring to the turning point of the 1999 Helsinki Summit, Erhürman highlighted that the failure to resolve the Cyprus issue was already embedded in the decision stating that the non-solution of the Cyprus problem would not be an obstacle for the full EU membership of Cyprus. He emphasized that this situation had a significant impact on the atmosphere for saying "yes" to the referendums along with the Copenhagen and Lahey decisions.

Erhürman emphasized the importance of accurately recording historical events, mentioning that the "yes" vote of 76 percent of the Greek Cypriots in the April 24 referendums was recorded in history. He also highlighted that the "yes" vote of 65 percent of the Turkish Cypriots was significant for the Turkish Cypriot community. Erhürman reiterated that every citizen of the TRNC had voted in referendums conducted under the United Nations (UN) supervision, emphasizing that this reflected the will of the people.

Regarding the claims that sovereignty would belong to the Greek Cypriots in a federation and the Turkish Cypriots would become a minority, Erhürman stated that such claims were already refuted by the referendums. He criticized the attempts to prevent the referendums and the establishment of the Immovable Property Commission (IPC) in 2005, noting that similar efforts were being made now through the IPC.

Erhürman stressed the need for a realistic solution, emphasizing that a two-zone, two-community, politically equal federation was the only realistic solution model. He criticized the misinterpretation of history and called for presenting accurate data without distorting concepts, stating that continuing the status quo would only harm the Turkish Cypriot people.
