One of the most successful teams of the season, Bayer Leverkusen, managed to avoid defeat last night, rescuing themselves from a potential loss in the 90+7th minute and breaking Benfica's 48-match unbeaten record that had stood for 59 years.
Hosting Roma, whom they defeated 2-0 away in the UEFA Europa League semi-final, Bayer Leverkusen found themselves trailing 2-0 due to penalty goals scored by Leandro Paredes in the 43rd and 66th minutes.
However, the Bundesliga champions managed to narrow the scoreline to 2-1 with Gianluca Mancini's own goal in the 83rd minute. Leverkusen then secured their place in the final by drawing 2-2 thanks to Josip Stanisic's goal in the 90+7th minute.
With this result, Leverkusen maintained their undefeated title throughout the season and broke Benfica's 59-year unbeaten record in Europe.
Benfica had previously gone unbeaten for 48 consecutive matches between December 1963 and February 1965.
