Duncan Smith remarked on the former vibrant town, now resembling a ghost city, saying:

"Fifty years ago, this was a beautiful holiday resort. Now, it resembles a border town. My hope, as both communities aspire, is for a resolution under international legal norms. These are my thoughts. As for your second question, I hope that direct flights to the TRNC start as soon as possible. Many British citizens reside in Cyprus and they wish for direct flights to visit their relatives here or in the UK. I hope these direct flights start without delay. I wish for direct flights to be launched so that Turkish Cypriots can visit their relatives in the UK as soon as possible.”

Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu's Statement:

Hasipoğlu expressed satisfaction with Smith's visit to the TRNC and thanked him for his support for direct flights to the TRNC. He emphasized the importance of Smith witnessing that they operate within the framework of international legal norms in Varosha. Hasipoğlu also thanked Smith for his respect towards the Turkish Cypriot people and stressed that direct flights from the TRNC to the UK are a rightful demand. He congratulated Smith on his reelection to the UK Parliament.
