Denktaş: Law on Property Sales to Foreigners Should Be Taken to Constitutional Court
Former Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktaş stated that "The law passed by the government regarding the sale of property to foreigners should be taken to the Constitutional Court."
In his remarks on Gündem Kıbrıs TV, Denktaş emphasized the importance of attracting European foreigners to the island and argued that the law passed by the government regarding the sale of property to foreigners should be taken to the Constitutional Court, stressing that no law can be retroactive.
"Cyprus is Being Sold to Jews Campaign"
Discussing the law on property passed by the government, Denktaş said, "We need to attract European foreigners here. The number of Jews doing business in the country does not exceed 10. The properties they sell are to foreigners, not Jews. A campaign that started in Turkey, claiming that Cyprus is being sold to Jews, led the government here to pass a law. Currently, property sales have stopped here. Following this, real estate agents in Turkey started advertising, saying 'Pay in TL, earn in foreign currency,' regarding properties in the TRNC. The Greeks selectively detained a Jewish investor first, then a foreigner who bought property, and then an intermediary. Our side has said nothing. They said they stand behind their titles. This law needs to be taken to the Constitutional Court. They made the law retroactive. No law can be retroactive. A political party needs to take this to the constitutional court."
"We Need Legal and Diplomatic Initiatives"
Denktaş also emphasized the need for a more active Immovable Property Commission, stating, "We have a fantastic mechanism at our disposal. There should have been an IPC for Turkish properties in the South as well. If there had been, relations would have been easier. But it was only established for us. Can this problem be solved? It can be solved if we intervene early. Then we need to think about how to file lawsuits against the South. The Greeks are targeting those who invest, buy property, and act as intermediaries. They have no issues with Turkey. Both Turkey needs to intervene diplomatically, and we need to make legal interventions and initiatives that the Greeks cannot refuse. If they refuse, Turkey will take this to international courts, and the matter will be settled."
