DAÜ-SEN: Public Lands Should Be Used for Public Benefit
The Eastern Mediterranean University Academic Staff Union (DAÜ-SEN) has expressed concerns about the potential privatization of land around the EMU Marine Club.
In a statement, DAÜ-SEN emphasized that public interest should be the primary consideration, asserting that entities such as the government, DAÜ, and the Vakıflar Administration (Evkaf) should act in the public’s best interest.
DAÜ-SEN welcomed the decision to lease the rectorate building to EMU for educational purposes at $1 but criticized the possibility of large-scale commercial interests benefiting from public lands. The union warned that it, along with other organizations, would respond strongly to any such developments.
The DAÜ-SEN statement highlighted the need for actions to align with the "superior public benefit" as noted in the Council of Ministers’ decision. It stressed that the primary focus should be on the public good or, in other words, the overall benefit to society. The statement emphasized that organizations such as the government, DAÜ, and Evkaf must act in accordance with their public-serving mandates.
The statement continued:
"The Marine Club, Cultural and Conference Center, and other facilities in the region are intended for educational, scientific, water sports, coastal sports, and other social activities. Regardless of whether the land is owned by the government or Evkaf, these areas should be utilized in a manner that serves the university, education, science, culture, and sports in line with the public interest."
