In an interview with "Politico," Christodoulides emphasized the urgency of renewed efforts, stating, "We do not have the luxury of waiting for a new initiative or effort."

Reflecting on the broader geopolitical context, he said, "When we look at what is happening in Gaza, we realize there is no such thing as a dormant dispute. An event that could lead Cyprus to conflict and impact the region could happen at any moment. The status quo is not a solution."

Christodoulides reiterated his call for a more active role by the EU in the Cyprus issue, advocating for the appointment of a political representative. He argued that a resolution benefiting both the EU and Turkey could emerge if the EU were more involved, suggesting that the answer to Turkey's intransigence lies within the EU.

Greek Government Spokesperson Clarifies Remarks

Meanwhile, Greek Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis clarified a previous statement reported in the media, which suggested that Greece was awaiting a plan for resolving the Cyprus issue. Marinakis explained that Greece was expecting a strategy outlining steps to be taken, not a finalized plan.

"There is no prepared plan that we expect to be presented by the UN Secretary-General or any other authority," Marinakis said, emphasizing that negotiating a two-state solution was not on the table.

Greek Foreign Minister Expresses Cautious Optimism

Greek Foreign Minister Yorgos Gerapetritis also shared a cautious optimism about the Cyprus issue. He noted, "Despite statements and actions from Turkey, the important thing is that I have a living hope and a small optimism that we will manage to restart the negotiations for the resolution of the Cyprus issue."

Gerapetritis highlighted the importance of peace and prosperity while acknowledging the historical and ongoing obligations of Turkey in Cyprus. "We cannot forget our history, especially Turkey's historical obligations in Cyprus. We will not make concessions on matters of our sovereignty and national red lines," he concluded.
