In an interview with the Turkish press, Ertuğruloğlu expressed his concerns, particularly highlighting the dependency on the Greek Cypriot side for the realization of these initiatives.

Ertuğruloğlu remarked, “Direct flights may be a positive development for some, but let’s say the airport is opened for international flights—under what conditions? The Greek Cypriot side gives approval through the ICAO, and it’s opened. However, next year, the Greek Cypriots may not approve these flights. Are we supposed to be satisfied that Ercan Airport, or as the Greek Cypriots call it, 'Timbu Airport,' is opened to international flights based on their approval?"

He continued by questioning who would grant the authority for direct trade and contact, saying, “The so-called Republic of Cyprus will grant the authority for direct trade. And who will approve lifting the isolation? The so-called government of the Republic of Cyprus. The 3D—Direct Flights, Direct Trade, Direct Contact—is being proposed. Of course, the Turkish Cypriots have a right to these. But here’s the main question: Who will give the authority for these to happen? If these can only happen with the recognition of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, then fine. But if they are to happen without recognition, there’s only one way: approval from the Greek side.”

Ertuğruloğlu further emphasized the sacrifices made by the Turkish Cypriots over the years, stating, "There have been martyrs, veterans, and a lot of sacrifices made. Are we now to live under the mercy of the Greek Cypriots, after all these years of struggle and sacrifice?”

His comments were featured as a headline in Volkan newspaper, which Ertuğruloğlu shared on his social media account.
