UBP's 23rd Ordinary Congress to Take Place Tomorrow: Three Candidates Compete

The 23rd Ordinary Congress of the National Unity Party (UBP) will be held tomorrow at the Atatürk Sports Hall in Nicosia. Ünal Üstel, Ahmet Melih Karavelioğlu, and Hasan Taçoy will compete for the leadership position. Voting will start at 11:00 AM and conclude at 9:00 PM. The congress will also elect the party council, high disciplinary board, and auditing board.

The congress will kick off at 8:30 AM with a quorum check, followed by the expected arrival of the presidential candidates around 9:15 AM. In addition to the leadership election, voting will also take place for the 70-member party council.

A total of 122 candidates will compete for seats on the party council, with voting continuing until 9:00 PM. On the ballot, Ünal Üstel will appear first, followed by Ahmet Melih Karavelioğlu in second place and Hasan Taçoy in third.

For the general party council, participants must select 16 candidates from Nicosia, 13 from Famagusta, 11 from Kyrenia, 5 from İskele, 3 from Omorfo, and 2 from Lefke, with fixed numbers for women's and youth quotas.

Vote Counting Schedule

Vote counting for the leadership position will commence after 9:00 PM tomorrow, while the party council votes will be counted on Sunday at 10:00 AM. Election results will be announced immediately after the counting is completed. The candidate receiving the simple majority will be elected leader. If a second round is necessary, the election will be held again a week later.

Congress Agenda

The congress will start at 8:30 AM with a quorum check by UBP Secretary General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu. Following the arrival of candidates at 9:15 AM, the Presidential Board will be formed at 9:30 AM.

After an opening ceremony, including a moment of silence and the National Anthem, the party activity report will be presented by the Secretary General, followed by a financial report from the party treasurer.

The agenda will include speeches from guests and the introduction of youth branch presidents.

President Ersin Tatar will address the assembly, after which a resolution regarding the Cyprus issue will be read and put to a vote.

Voting for the high disciplinary board, auditing board, leadership, and party council will begin at 11:00 AM and end at 9:00 PM.
