According to a statement from the Presidency, Tatar conveyed his sadness regarding a banner displayed during the Panathinaikos-Maccabi Tel Aviv match in South Cyprus, which read, "No one forgets the 50-year occupation of Cyprus."

In the phone conversation, Tatar remarked:

"A banner that contradicts the spirit of sports was displayed in the friendly match between Panathinaikos and Maccabi Tel Aviv, suggesting an occupation issue in Cyprus. Sports should be a realm where friendship and brotherhood thrive. It is unacceptable to bring distorted narratives of Cyprus into sports arenas and allow provocations. Such actions seriously damage the sense of trust between our two peoples. There has been no occupation in Cyprus for 50 years, but rather peace and tranquility."

Tatar also thanked Ergin Ataman for his significant contributions to the development of Turkish Cypriot basketball player Erten Gazi, who continues his career in Turkey.
