Denktaş: It's Time to Discuss the System

Speaking on Diyalog TV, Denktaş emphasized the lack of communication between the government and the opposition as the primary cause of the crisis. He stated, “The parliament belongs to the people, not the parties. Therefore, the opposition shares responsibility for resolving this crisis swiftly.”

"We Must Discuss the System"

Denktaş identified the systemic blockages as the source of numerous problems on the public agenda. He stressed the need for a serious discussion on changing the system, saying, “At the core of what we are experiencing are the blockages in our parliamentary and electoral systems. System change must be placed on the table as a top priority.” He also criticized political polarization, describing it as a tactic to garner votes that does not address deeper issues.

Entering a New Phase

Regarding the recent talks in New York, Denktaş noted, “A meeting planned under the guise of being ‘agenda-free’ turned out to have a clear agenda. Another meeting is scheduled in Nicosia, involving Türkiye and Greece, marking a new phase for us. Our claim to be an equal sovereign party as a state must be upheld through mutual agreement. We must align on the topics we bring to the table, or we risk facing difficulties during negotiations.”

Greek Cypriot Actions are Completely Unjust

Commenting on the arrests related to property disputes, Denktaş said, “The arrests made by the Greek Cypriot side contradict the property regime established during the Annan Plan period. We must demand the establishment of a commission for compensation of Turkish properties in the South as well. It cannot be one-sided. Greeks left property in the North, but Turks also left property in the South.” He added, “If they insist on this narrative of stolen property, we have our own rightful claims, including the future stolen from our people before 1974.”
