Denktaş: "The Parliamentary System Has Collapsed, a Presidential System is Necessary"

Former Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktaş has stated that the parliamentary system in Northern Cyprus has collapsed, and a shift to a 'modern' presidential system is essential. He emphasized that under the current system, "UBP will leave, CTP will come; CTP will leave, UBP will return, but the problems will persist."

In an interview with Kıbrıs Postası, Denktaş highlighted that the parliamentary system is no longer functional and called for reforms to the Election Law, stressing the need to transition to a contemporary presidential system.

Denktaş underlined the importance of clearly explaining the benefits of the presidential system to the public. He noted that the ongoing issues would remain unchanged under the current setup. "Under the present system, UBP will leave, CTP will come, or vice versa, but the problems will continue," said Denktaş. "However, in a presidential system, we will know who is responsible, and ministers will not come from within the Parliament."

He also pointed out that a well-structured presidential system would allow for stronger parliamentary oversight, helping to resolve the current political deadlock.
