Gürkut: “An Unforgivable Incident; Government Ultimately Responsible, Nurses Are ‘Victims’”
The President of the Cyprus Turkish Doctors’ Union (Tıp-İş), Özlem Gürkut, criticized the government following the detention of five healthcare workers after a newborn died from a medical alcohol incident in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Speaking on Ulaş Barış's "Gündem" program on Kıbrıs Postası TV, Gürkut described the incident as "unforgivable," pointing to a rising patient count with no increase in healthcare staffing. She stated, “Five nurses have been sacrificed.”
Gürkut highlighted the strain on healthcare, noting the growing patient numbers without a corresponding increase in medical personnel. She called for a thorough examination of the mistake, saying, “This is a tragic, unforgivable incident, and it demands comprehensive assessment.”
Discussing the logistics of medical alcohol supply, Gürkut revealed a problematic system where bottles are sent to the pharmacy for refilling and sometimes re-supplied in water bottles, which she noted could have led to confusion. She emphasized the incident was unintentional, adding, “The issue is not only the incident itself but the underlying causes and processes that led to it.”
Calling on the government to take accountability, Gürkut criticized authorities for neglecting healthcare staff needs amid increasing workloads, asserting that the nurses were ultimately "victims" of this systemic issue. She concluded, “We wouldn’t want to be in their place. We must now focus on preventing such incidents in the future.”
