Tatar: “We Will Not Compromise on Our Just Cause and Fundamental Principles”
President Ersin Tatar marked the 41st anniversary of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) with a speech at the official ceremony held in Nicosia. Addressing attendees on Dr. Fazıl Küçük Boulevard, Tatar emphasized the unwavering commitment to the principles of sovereignty and the pursuit of a fair solution on the island.
“We will not compromise on our just cause and fundamental principles,” Tatar stated, underlining that any solution in Cyprus must be based on the equal sovereignty of two states. “Our stance on sovereignty is non-negotiable. We will not sit at tables only to yield,” he declared.
President Tatar affirmed that the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for independence would continue unabated. He stressed that negotiations would only be possible if their sovereignty was recognized. “It is clear that the lifting of embargoes is essential,” Tatar added.
In remarks made during an informal gathering, Tatar reiterated the need to end isolations imposed on the TRNC. He pointed out that, unlike the TRNC, the Greek Cypriot side has intensified its pressure and adopted increasingly aggressive stances aimed at undermining the Turkish Cypriot community. “Nevertheless, we will never abandon our just cause and fundamental principles. We are ready for cooperation based on sovereignty,” he affirmed.
Highlighting the resilience of the Turkish Cypriot people, Tatar said: “We have endured attempts at annihilation, but we have never faltered, because we are the children of Atatürk. Greetings to Anatolia and Turkey.” He concluded by commemorating the historical significance of November 15, 1983: “Forty years ago, the Turkish Cypriot people decided they would not live under the domination of another nation. We have shared the value of independence, freedom, and liberty with our youth.”
