Man Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Theft and Attempted Online Sale
Halit Karadeniz, who stole items from a construction site in Nicosia and attempted to sell them online, has been sentenced to 3 years in prison. The 28-year-old was convicted of charges including "Breaking and Entering," "Intentional Damage," and "Theft" by the Nicosia Criminal Court.
The panel, consisting of Chief Judge Füsun Cemaller, Senior Judge Vedia Berkut Barkın, and Judge Tutku Candaş, unanimously delivered the verdict, which was read by Judge Barkın.
According to the court, on March 7, 2023, at around 9:00 PM, Karadeniz broke the entrance door of a construction site on Demir Street, causing damage, before entering and stealing various items. These included a Makita-brand grinder belonging to Tekin Yalçın, a JVC-brand mixer, three unknown brand toilets, and three unknown brand sinks.
The court also revealed that on March 14, 2023, Karadeniz attempted to sell the stolen items online, which led to his identification. Judge Barkın emphasized that breaking and entering, as well as theft, are common and concerning crimes that impact society. He further noted that Karadeniz had previously been granted bail in 2019 for a theft offense but had continued to commit crimes rather than reforming.
The judge considered this behavior an aggravating factor in the sentencing. He stressed the importance of deterrent and exemplary sentences for crimes that violate property rights. Additionally, it was noted that Karadeniz had also committed theft and fraud in the Kyrenia region, and these offenses were taken into account in the ruling.
While acknowledging that Karadeniz expressed remorse and compensated all victims except one, the judge sentenced him to 3 years in prison, considering both the mitigating and aggravating circumstances.
