Police Seize 27 Electric Scooters, Remind Public of Regulations
Authorities confiscated 27 electric scooters found violating regulations, initiating legal action against the operators. The police confirmed that routine traffic checks include monitoring electric scooter compliance. During these checks, 27 scooters were seized, and legal proceedings were commenced.
The Police General Directorate noted that amendments to the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations were published in the Official Gazette on October 26, 2022, and reminded drivers of the rules.
What is an Electric Scooter?
An electric scooter is defined as a wheeled vehicle with a maximum speed of 30 km/h, under 351 watts of power, equipped with brakes, a non-slip deck, handlebars, a vertical steering mechanism, a headlight that can illuminate at least 20 meters, a rear red light and reflector, and a sound device audible from 30 meters. Scooters exceeding 351 watts or 30 km/h are classified as motor vehicles and require registration and an appropriate driver’s license (J, H1, H2, or H).
Violations on the Rise
Routine traffic inspections revealed widespread non-compliance. The statement from the Police General Directorate highlighted that between November 11 and 17, inspections of road usage included electric scooter regulations. Consequently, 27 scooters were seized for non-compliance, and legal measures were taken against the drivers.
Regulations for Electric Scooter Operators
The police reiterated that electric scooters cannot be used by individuals under 18 or on highways where the speed limit exceeds 50 km/h. Key rules include:
-
Use bicycle lanes where available. If not, scooters may be used on roads, keeping to the left without risking traffic safety.
-
No passengers allowed.
-
Only carry items that can be transported on one’s back.
-
No side-by-side riding on motor vehicle roads.
-
Sidewalk use is prohibited.
-
Towing or holding onto another vehicle while riding is forbidden.
-
Both hands must remain on the handlebars; riding with one hand is not permitted.
-
Performing stunts or acrobatics is prohibited.
The statement concluded by emphasizing that traffic inspections regarding electric scooters and other traffic matters would continue, urging all drivers to adhere to the rules.
