Arıklı’s Post-Election Remarks: ‘The Neighborhood’s Honor is Saved’
Following the election of Ziya Öztürkler as Speaker of the Assembly, Erhan Arıklı, leader of the coalition partner Rebirth Party (YDP) and Minister of Public Works and Transport, commented, “The neighborhood’s honor is saved.”
The issue of the Assembly Speakership had escalated into a crisis, affecting even the November 15 commemorations, according to Arıklı.
Recalling that Öztürkler won the election in the first round with 27 votes, Arıklı stated, “Thus, the neighborhood’s honor was saved.”
Arıklı’s full statement reads as follows:
“THANKFULLY, WE ARE RETURNING TO NORMAL...
As known, the issue of the Assembly Speakership had turned into a full-blown crisis, even impacting the November 15 celebrations. The reception organized by the Speaker was boycotted by the Main Opposition, while other leftist parties criticized the CTP leader for standing alongside Ziya Öztürkler at official ceremonies.
Despite just recovering from surgery, the Prime Minister made significant efforts over the weekend to resolve the crisis.
Ultimately, it was agreed that Ziya Öztürkler would resign and new elections would be held. Early this morning, Ziya Öztürkler resigned. The UBP group convened, and with the input of DP and YDP, Öztürkler was re-nominated.
Had Öztürkler not been re-elected, the CTP’s formula would have come into play: another UBP MP would have been nominated and elected in the first round with CTP’s support.
However, this scenario would have been an embarrassment for both UBP and the government. A government with the support of 29 MPs relying on the Main Opposition’s votes to secure the 26 required for the Speakership would have been a disgrace for all of us.
Fortunately, this did not happen. Ziya Öztürkler won the election with 27 votes, and thus, the neighborhood’s honor was saved.
Now, it’s time to return to normalcy...”
