Özgür Özel: "There Could Be a Change in the Presidency of the TRNC"
Turkey's Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel suggested that there could be a change in the presidency of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and noted that, according to surveys, Tufan Erhürman, the candidate of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), is currently leading. He also pointed out that Turkey's interventions have always had an influence on Cyprus politics.
In an interview on the YouTube show "Bana Baştan Anlat" with Özlem Gürses, Özel discussed his recent visit to Cyprus, stating, “Last year, I made my first visit to Cyprus on its Republic Day. I became party leader on November 5, and my first overseas trip was to Cyprus on November 15. I was also in Cyprus on July 20 for the 50th anniversary of the Peace Operation. Today marks the 41st anniversary of the TRNC. I flew from Ankara in the morning to attend ceremonies there, and now I am here for your broadcast.”
Regarding the upcoming presidential elections, Özel said, "There will be a presidential election next October, but due to the debates surrounding the Parliamentary Speaker elections, early elections are on the agenda."
He also emphasized, “There could be a change in the presidency of Cyprus. In the polls, CTP's candidate Tufan Bey is ahead. They are competing against the current president. However, if Cyprus politics is left to itself, it could turn out very differently, but Turkey’s interventions always have an impact on Cyprus politics. It will be a very competitive race. CTP is our sister party. We are together in the Socialist International. We are brothers with CTP, but we are also related to all of Cyprus.”
