In a joint statement, the organizations emphasized the importance of defending freedom of expression and the public’s right to information. “We invite all citizens to the courtroom tomorrow to stand for justice, freedom of expression, and the public’s right to know,” the statement read.

Describing the case as a critical moment for freedom of thought and expression in the country, the statement noted: “BASIN-SEN President and journalist Ali Kişmir, facing up to 10 years in prison, has merely fulfilled the duties of his profession by defending the public’s right to information and expressing his views.”

“Silencing Journalists Silences Society”

The statement also criticized the legal proceedings, citing the ambiguity of the charges and the arbitrary nature of the process as incompatible with universal principles of modern law.

“Efforts to silence journalists effectively mute the voice of society,” it said, adding that such actions threaten freedom of expression, press independence, and the democratic rights of Turkish Cypriots.

Urging solidarity, the statement concluded: “Let us defend freedom of thought and expression. Attend the hearing tomorrow and show support for these fundamental rights.”
