Strike at Ercan Airport Postponed for 60 Days
The planned strike by the Air Traffic Controllers Union (HTKS) at Ercan Airport has been postponed for 60 days, according to an official decision published in the Official Gazette.
The union had announced the strike to protest issues including the failure to meet minimum aviation service standards, changes to the cost-of-living calculation method, and the tax system, which it claims unfairly places low-income workers in high tax brackets.
The Council of Ministers justified the postponement under the Essential Services Strike Ban Regulation, citing national and public security concerns as well as disruptions to civil aviation and airport services.
The Official Gazette stated:
"The Council of Ministers, pursuant to Article 16(3) of the Trade Unions and Collective Agreements Law No. 42/1996 and the Essential Services Strike Ban Regulation Law No. 54/2024, effective from December 8, 2024, has decided to postpone the 24-hour strike planned by the Air Traffic Controllers Union and/or any other unions in the Air Traffic Control Department and/or all units at Ercan Airport for a period of 60 days starting from December 9, 2024."
