Minister Amcaoğlu: Concerns Over Güvercinlik Industrial Zone Agreement Unfounded
Economy and Energy Minister Olgun Amcaoğlu addressed concerns surrounding an international agreement to open the Güvercinlik Third Phase Industrial Zone to investors from Turkey, stating that such worries were baseless.
In a written statement issued through the ministry’s press office, Amcaoğlu emphasized that the agreement would not permit investments in sectors with surplus production and assured that no steps would jeopardize the future of local industry or industrialists.
"Local Industry Is Fully Protected"
Amcaoğlu dismissed the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Industry's concerns about ambiguities in the agreement, stressing that every measure had been taken to ensure no negative impact on the country's industry and producers. He stated, “The Chamber’s leadership is well aware of this.”
He further explained that during the permit approval process for industrial zone investments, the Chamber’s officials would have more say than the relevant minister.
“There is no need for concern over this agreement,” he said. “Projects and agreements are for the future of our country, and no one should make misleading or confusing statements.”
"No Investments in Surplus Production Sectors"
Amcaoğlu reiterated that investments would not be allowed in sectors with surplus production. “Our government is fully aware of the industrialists’ concerns about energy costs and minimum wages, and we are working on solutions,” he added.
He assured that foreign investors and local producers would compete under equal conditions, with local industrialists continuing to benefit from incentives, a point he said was well-known to the industry.
Support for Local Producers
Amcaoğlu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting local producers, stating that all steps related to the Güvercinlik project had been carefully planned to safeguard their interests.
He acknowledged the Chamber's criticism regarding the poor state of existing industrial zones, noting that he partially agreed with the assessment. However, he emphasized that efforts were underway to resolve infrastructure and investment deficiencies.
“We are making maximum efforts to address all issues,” Amcaoğlu said. "Our love for this country drives us to support our industrialists and tradespeople in every way possible."
