Passenger and Aircraft Traffic Increases at Ercan Airport
Passenger numbers at Ercan Airport rose by 21.14% in the first 11 months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, while aircraft traffic increased by 14.85%, according to T&T Airport Operations.
From January to November 2023, the old Ercan Airport served 3,637,741 passengers. Following the opening of the new Ercan Airport, this figure reached 4,406,672 in the same period of 2024. Similarly, aircraft movements rose from 24,319 in 2023 to 27,931 in 2024.
Modernization Spurs Growth
T&T highlighted that the state-of-the-art infrastructure, eco-friendly design, and modern architecture of the new Ercan Airport have been instrumental in the increase. The extension of the runway to 3,000 meters now allows larger aircraft to land, contributing significantly to the rise in passenger and aircraft numbers.
Monthly Growth Breakdown
- January 2024: Passenger numbers rose 33.2% compared to January 2023, reaching 334,510.
- February 2024: An increase of 56.99% was recorded, with 354,960 passengers served.
- March-April 2024: Growth rates were 31.10% and 28.7%, respectively.
- May-November 2024: Monthly increases ranged from 14.92% to 26.88%, culminating in 469,934 passengers in November 2024, compared to 370,570 in November 2023.
Aircraft Movements
The new airport began serving larger aircraft with its extended runway and boarding bridges. Aircraft movements rose steadily, with November 2024 marking a peak at 3,034 flights, compared to 1,848 in January 2023.
The continued modernization and operational improvements at Ercan Airport signal its growing role as a key aviation hub in the region.
