Speaking on behalf of the unions, Cyprus Turkish Teachers' Union (KTÖS) Secretary General Burak Maviş announced during a meeting yesterday that a series of actions and strikes had been planned.

Maviş described the proposed legislation as a blow to organized labor, stating, "The draft law aimed at restricting the right to collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) undermines both existing and potential gains. Additionally, the proposed removal of consolidated cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) will reduce the real value of salaries and weaken purchasing power."

Strikes and Actions Set to Begin Wednesday

Issuing a final warning to the government, Maviş declared that if the controversial legislation is not withdrawn and the strike ban decree is not repealed, unions will commence strikes and actions at strategically significant locations starting Wednesday, December 25.

He added that a general strike would coincide with the parliamentary committee’s review of the draft laws.

"Policies that deprive workers of their right to a decent standard of living and drive them into poverty will face our full resistance. This is not just a struggle for the unions; it is a fight for the entire community," Maviş emphasized.
