President Tatar: "Two-State Solution is the Only Path for Cyprus"
President Ersin Tatar emphasized that any future agreement in Cyprus must undoubtedly involve a two-state solution, highlighting the necessity for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to be a part of any potential settlement as a sovereign state. Tatar stressed that the notion of a community-to-community understanding is a thing of the past, and the idea of a federation is now closed.
Speaking at a ceremony at the İskele Larnaka Martyrs’ Monument, Tatar began by honoring all martyrs with respect and gratitude, extending his thanks to the veterans. He highlighted the importance of expressing their gratitude and respect for the martyrs in the presence of their families as a responsibility.
President Tatar noted that the Turkish Cypriot community had successfully resisted efforts aimed at its destruction, leading to the current situation. He reiterated that, given the current circumstances and the new national policy, any potential agreement for Cyprus would necessarily involve a two-state solution, with the TRNC as an integral part of such an agreement. He emphasized that the era of community-based understanding had passed, and the federation option was closed.
Tatar also underscored the significant contributions of martyrs in the creation of the TRNC, the Blue Homeland, and the Sky Homeland, as well as the national values that shaped these territories. "Without our martyrs, we would not have a national state today. This geography would look completely different, and Greece might have had much more influence here," he said.
Reflecting on the hardships endured by the Turkish Cypriot people, Tatar pointed out that the current free and honorable life they enjoy, as well as the hopeful future they are now passing on to the younger generation, is a result of the sacrifices made through struggle. He emphasized that the past should never be forgotten, stressing that those who forget history are doomed to be erased from geography and history itself.
Tatar also noted that since 1974, peace has prevailed in Cyprus and emphasized that, for peace to continue, the Greek Cypriots must reassess their thoughts and worldview according to the realities of Cyprus. He called on Britain and other major powers to adjust their policies according to the realities of the island, asserting that the two separate states of Cyprus could cooperate in various areas while maintaining their sovereignty.
