Çeler: Cyprus Needs Peace, Not War
TDP (Social Democracy Party) Leader Zeki Çeler expressed concerns over the low-flying fighter jets passing over Lefke, warning that such actions signal imminent danger. He emphasized, "No one should normalize the sound of war. Cyprus needs peace."
Çeler reminded the public of the recent incident in which foreign fighter jets flew low over Lefke, highlighting the escalating tension in the region. He warned against normalizing such provocative acts, stressing the importance of recognizing the risks involved.
In a written statement, Çeler pointed out that both the region and recent history demonstrate the catastrophic consequences of war. He stressed that it was irrational for Cypriots to ignore their past and flirt with the brink of war in a high-tension environment.
"The low-flying fighter jets over Lefke last night are a stark reminder of how serious the dangers are," Çeler said, calling for caution.
Referring to the Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides' policy of inviting foreign armies to the island, Çeler warned that such actions did not bode well for Cyprus' future. He criticized the growing divide, with one side demonizing peace and resolution, while the other seeks political superiority by engaging in international power struggles.
"There is no place for such thinking. Cyprus needs tranquility, reconciliation, and peace. The responsibility of both sides on the island is of historical significance," he added.
Çeler concluded with a strong message: "The true skill lies in securing peace. War is cowardice; peace is courage… Be brave." He called on the people not to allow dangerous games to jeopardize Cyprus, and reiterated that no one should normalize the sound of war planes, insisting that peace must be the goal. "Nothing about war or conflict is normal. What is normal is peace," Çeler emphasized.
