70 Traffic Accidents in One Week

The Police General Directorate (PGM) reported that 70 traffic accidents occurred between December 16 and December 22, resulting in one fatality and 13 injuries.

According to PGM, during this period, a total of 70 accidents were recorded across the country. One of the accidents resulted in death, while 19 individuals were injured. The causes of the accidents were varied, with 23 accidents linked to speeding, 16 to careless driving, 14 to failure to stop at intersections, 10 to tailgating, and 7 to other forms of negligence. The total damage caused by the accidents was estimated at 4.6 million TL.

The breakdown of accident locations is as follows: 21 accidents in Kyrenia, 17 in Nicosia, 15 in Famagusta, 9 in Iskele, and 8 in Omorfo.

Traffic Inspections

Between December 16 and 22, PGM conducted traffic inspections, checking 12,724 drivers. A total of 2,240 drivers were reported for violations, 256 vehicles were impounded, and 11 drivers were arrested.

The distribution of offenses is as follows:

  • Speeding (659 violations)
  • Speeding detected by mobile units (322)
  • Driving an unregistered vehicle (317)
  • Using a mobile phone while driving (205)
  • Failing to comply with traffic signs (143)
  • Driving an uninspected vehicle (103)
  • Driving without insurance or outside coverage (71)
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol (69)
  • Driving without wearing a seatbelt (59)
  • Unauthorized passenger transport (56)
  • Careless driving (47)
  • Applying window films that obstruct visibility (23)
  • Failing to comply with traffic light rules (13)
  • Driving without a license (11)
  • Riding a motorcycle without a helmet (2)
  • Other traffic offenses (403).
