Unions to Government: "Enough of Your Orders, Think About the People!"
More than thirty unions continued their protests outside the Parliament today, in opposition to proposed amendments to the Collective Bargaining, Strike, and Referendum Law, as well as the Cost of Living Adjustment Law. The unions have been vocal against the changes, with the message, "Enough of your orders, think about the people!" being prominently featured during the demonstration.
The 32 unions, which have organized general strikes in their respective workplaces, are holding their protests outside the Parliament building. The protests are a continuation of their stance against the government's proposed legislative changes.
Selma Eylem, President of the Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers' Union (KTOEÖS), made the opening statement at the protest. She criticized the government for failing to understand the messages sent by the unions and for disregarding the demands of the people. Eylem stated, "It seems the government did not understand the message we sent yesterday. We are here, and we will not allow you to do what you plan."
Eylem also accused the government of preparing the bill "under instructions" and declared, "Today, we were once again called to a committee meeting. Enough of your orders, think about the people!"
The unions are demanding the withdrawal of the proposed bills, which they argue would lead to significant loss of rights for workers. Protests are set to continue until their demands are met.
