Foreign Ministry Condemns French Warplanes for Airspace Violation
The Foreign Ministry issued a new statement following the violation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) airspace by French warplanes, emphasizing that all necessary measures would be taken in coordination with Turkey.
The ministry criticized the Greek Cypriot Defense Ministry’s claim that flight permissions were granted by the Greek Cypriot administration, describing it as an “example of audacity and irresponsibility.”
The statement read:
“The Greek Cypriot side, under the guise of the so-called ‘Republic of Cyprus,’ has no authority to grant flight permissions concerning the airspace over the entire island.
Since 1977, flights over the TRNC airspace have been conducted under the Ercan Advisory Airspace and are directed by the Ercan Air Traffic Control Center.
Any claims or interventions by the Greek Cypriot side over the Ercan Advisory Airspace are both extremely dangerous and illegal. However, the Greek Cypriot side occasionally intervenes in these flights, endangering human lives. Countries like France, which condone such sovereign actions by the Greek Cypriot side, fail to grasp the perilous game they are playing.
We reiterate that our country will not tolerate such reckless actions and will take all necessary measures, in coordination with the Republic of Turkey, to address these provocations.”

The Greek Cypriot administration’s claim that it can grant flight permissions across the island is not just bold, it’s downright reckless. For decades, the Ercan Air Traffic Control Center has safely managed flights over the TRNC through the Ercan Advisory Airspace, a system that works seamlessly and keeps everyone safe. Pretending otherwise is nothing more than a denial of reality and an unnecessary provocation. But it’s not just about words. The Greek Cypriot side has repeatedly interfered with flights in TRNC-controlled airspace, and that’s where things get dangerous. These actions aren’t just illegal, they put lives at risk. Commercial and civilian aviation is no place for political games, yet their actions show a blatant disregard for safety and international norms. What’s even more frustrating is the support these provocations get from countries like France, who should know better. By backing the Greek Cypriot side, they’re encouraging actions that threaten stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond. The TRNC, together with Türkiye, has made it clear that it won’t tolerate this kind of behavior. It’s not just about standing up for its rights, it’s about making sure that a dangerous precedent doesn’t take root. If the Greek Cypriot side wants peace on this island, it’s time they stopped the provocations and started taking responsibility for their actions. Enough is enough.
