KTÖS Criticizes VAT Increases, Calls for Unified Resistance
The Secretary General of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers' Union (KTÖS), Burak Maviş, has condemned the government's changes to the VAT Regulations, stating that the new rules increase VAT rates on nearly all consumer products, including essential food items.
In a written statement, Maviş explained that under the revised regulations, items previously exempt from VAT are now subject to 5% and 10% rates, while products taxed at 5% have seen their rates rise to 10%.
“These increases, targeting essential products indispensable in daily life, will further burden low- and middle-income segments of society. Already struggling with high inflation and rising living costs, citizens will find it even harder to meet their basic needs,” Maviş said.
He argued that the VAT hikes would not only impact individuals but also harm small- and medium-sized enterprises, accelerating economic contraction.
“Those claiming to reduce inflation are, with every decision, fueling it further. These actions are devoid of economic rationale and disregard the well-being of society,” Maviş added.
Criticizing the government for failing to adopt policies that would enhance purchasing power and reduce income inequality, Maviş accused officials of consistently targeting citizens' wallets to offset the economic crisis.
“This system, which impoverishes the public while enriching capital, is entirely detached from economic and social justice,” he said.
Maviş highlighted the ongoing union efforts regarding Collective Labor Agreements and Cost-of-Living Adjustments, stating that these struggles have been proven justified once again. He pledged that the union would continue its determined resistance against such policies in 2025.
Expressing hope that the new year would bring justice, equality, and policies prioritizing public welfare, Maviş called on all citizens to unite in the fight for a fairer society.
