Mayor of Kyrenia Announces Start of New Cemetery Operations in May
Kyrenia Mayor Murat Şenkul has announced via his social media account that burial operations at the new Kyrenia Cemetery will begin after May.
Şenkul explained that the growing population of the city has caused various issues, including a shortage of cemetery space. He said, "When we took office, the Karaoğlanoğlu cemetery only had 50 available burial plots. We have expanded the cemetery area by opening a parcel in the entrance section and another area used as a parking lot by the American University of Kyrenia, bringing us to the current situation."
He further stated, "The land provided for the new cemetery was almost inaccessible and located on a slope. Unfortunately, in the past two years, we have started work to create access roads by filling the land with thousands of truckloads of soil."
Şenkul added, "We are hopeful that the burial operations at the new Kyrenia Cemetery will begin in May."
He continued by noting that in addition to burial areas, facilities for pre-burial procedures will also be constructed at the new site. "Until May, we have opened a new section at the parking area next to the American University of Kyrenia to accommodate burial operations," he said.
Addressing the discussions surrounding the ownership of the land, Şenkul emphasized that the primary consideration for the city was that the area had been providing parking for the American University of Kyrenia. "Without getting into the debates over the ownership of the land, we acknowledge that this land serves an important purpose for one of our city's significant institutions. I have spoken with Mr. Serhat Akpınar and explained the situation. We both agreed that the new section will be used for the city's burial needs until May, and after that, operations will transition to the new cemetery."
Şenkul concluded by thanking the American University of Kyrenia, particularly Serhat Akpınar, for their cooperative approach, saying, "On behalf of my city, I express my gratitude to the American University for their willingness to work together without turning the issue into a point of contention."
