"A new crossing point in Nicosia will contribute positively to both sides. The Haspolat crossing point will not only boost trade but also alleviate the heavy traffic burden at the Metehan Crossing Point," Tatar said.

Accompanied by Nicosia Turkish Municipality (LTB) Mayor Mehmet Harmancı, Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce President Turgay Deniz, and Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry President Ali Kamacıoğlu, Tatar conducted inspections alongside the Security Forces Commander Major General İlker Görgülü and a military delegation.

"I Support the New Crossing in Nicosia"

Tatar acknowledged criticism regarding new crossing points but reiterated his support for a second vehicular crossing in Nicosia. He noted that the Greek Cypriot side had repeatedly proposed different arrangements, including transit crossings, and highlighted that a new crossing in Haspolat would significantly ease the 65% of border traffic concentrated at the Metehan Crossing Point.

“There is a shared will and strong support for opening the Haspolat crossing point,” Tatar stressed, adding that discussions with local stakeholders had confirmed the potential benefits of this initiative for vehicular traffic.

While addressing critiques of inaction on crossings, Tatar underscored his commitment to progress and expressed hope for constructive steps that would positively impact both sides in the coming year.

Economic and Municipal Support for the Crossing

Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce President Turgay Deniz highlighted the necessity of cooperation between the two communities, stressing that trade was a pathway to building trust and peace. He called for urgent action, pointing to the high percentage of crossings already taking place in Nicosia.

LTB Mayor Mehmet Harmancı echoed the need for a new crossing, describing the current situation at the Metehan Crossing Point as burdensome. He called for the new crossing to be viewed as a standalone necessity, free from conditions linked to other crossing points.

Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry President Ali Kamacıoğlu also emphasized the importance of the Haspolat crossing for both communities. He urged the Greek Cypriot leader to contribute without imposing conditions, stressing the crossing's strategic location and mutual benefits.

The Haspolat crossing is anticipated to facilitate greater cooperation and ease tensions between the communities while addressing longstanding traffic and logistical challenges.
