Atan Criticizes Security Measures at Famagusta Port
Cyprus Turkish Public Servants Union (KAMU-SEN) President Metin Atan criticized Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arıklı's statements regarding the X-ray scanner at Famagusta Port, emphasizing that "security is ensured not by mere declarations but through systematic efforts."
In a written statement, Atan pointed out the inadequacy of current security measures, noting that only 10% of the 200 trucks passing through the port daily are inspected, which he described as a significant security lapse. He argued that attributing this to the device's capacity is an attempt to shirk responsibility.
“Leaving customs processes so weak creates the perception that anyone can bring anything into the country,” Atan stated, adding that the public finds the process non-transparent and questions how vehicles are selected for inspection.
Atan criticized the reliance on vague assurances such as “suspected vehicles are inspected” and demanded clarity: “How does this suspicion mechanism operate? What criteria are used to select vehicles?”
He further argued that the explanations given by officials were insufficient, stating, “The excuses offered are worse than the problem itself. Society expects more effective monitoring and reliable mechanisms in security systems.”
Atan called for the effective use of available technology and demanded answers from the government, saying, “The security gaps at the port raise serious questions. Who is accountable for this negligence?” He urged the authorities to provide "satisfactory" responses to public concerns.
