Greece Donates €40,000 to Missing Persons Committee
Greece has contributed €40,000 to the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), raising its total financial support to €425,000 since 2006, according to a CMP statement.
The CMP expressed gratitude for the donation, emphasizing its role in facilitating the identification and return of remains to families, aiming to end the uncertainty that has affected families for decades.
Established in 1981 under a UN-brokered agreement between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders, the CMP began active operations in 2006 with support from the EU. Its mission includes the exhumation, identification, and return of remains to their families.
To date, the remains of 1,051 missing persons—both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots—have been identified and returned to their families for proper funerals. The CMP highlighted the need for continued donor support to sustain this bi-communal initiative.
