According to a statement from the ministry, while the number of small ruminants increased by 10% in 2024, milk production has not reached the expected levels. The decision to import breeding sheep aims to enhance local herds' genetic potential, improve milk yields, and ensure the sustainable growth of halloumi production.

The initiative, deemed a significant project, will be executed by the Livestock Cooperative, supported by protocols signed between the Ministry of Agriculture, the Livestock Cooperative, and the Central Bank of the TRNC.

Project Details and Application Requirements

The project, launched to support the livestock sector, will provide subsidized loans to eligible individuals and entities.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be citizens of the TRNC.
  • Own a registered farm in the Veterinary Department's Animal Registration System.
  • Possess at least 50 breeding small ruminants.
  • Operate under animal welfare-compliant conditions and have infrastructure suitable for the milk cooling chain.

Applicants can apply to import between 20 and 300 animals. Applications will be submitted to the Livestock Department using forms available on the ministry's website. Approved applications will benefit from the project's resources.

Financing and Implementation

Funding for importing breeding sheep will be provided through subsidized loans. Producers interested in obtaining credit must submit the required documents specified by the bank.

The project seeks to enhance milk quality and ensure a sustainable increase in halloumi production through improved breeding practices.
