Tatar: “The Federation Solution Died in 2004”
President Ersin Tatar and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a joint press conference during Fidan’s visit to the TRNC. Addressing the Cyprus issue, Tatar emphasized that the idea of a “federation solution” ended with the 2004 referendum, where a majority voted “No.”
He stated that a federation-based agreement is not a viable solution for either side. He also highlighted that there have always been parties unwilling to accept this reality and that this would likely remain the case.
Tatar expressed gratitude to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for facilitating the TRNC’s observer membership in the Organization of Turkic States, describing this as a significant achievement.
On crossing points, Tatar said, “As leaders, I hope we can produce solutions to these issues,” and noted ongoing efforts to open a new crossing point in the Haspolat area to alleviate congestion at the Metehan crossing.
Tatar announced plans to inaugurate the new Presidential complex, the Parliament building, and a national park by April.
Referring to upcoming diplomatic efforts, Tatar stated that an informal meeting between the two sides, involving Turkey, Greece, and the United Kingdom, is scheduled for mid-March in Switzerland, with details to be finalized soon.
He underlined the importance of Turkey’s 1974 Peace Operation, which he credited for ensuring peace and security for the people of the TRNC, despite the challenges they face.
On recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, Tatar noted that Turkey has emerged as a global player in the region, which has also elevated the TRNC’s status. He asserted that the TRNC is now indispensable in the geopolitical landscape.
