Maviş: 2025 Will Be a Year of Struggle for Unions
Burak Maviş, General Secretary of the Cyprus Turkish Teachers’ Union (KTÖS), criticized the government's policies during a press statement regarding the injunction case filed against the “Emergency Services Strike Ban Regulation” decree-law. He stated, "We want an economist as the finance minister, not a doctor."
The press statement was made outside the Nicosia District Court by five unions authorized in the public sector, addressing their case before the Constitutional Court.
Maviş emphasized that 2025 would be a year of struggle for unions, adding that if the cost-of-living calculation method is not revised and continues to negatively impact disadvantaged groups, it will only ensure minimum living standards while undermining essential areas such as socialization, education, and healthcare.
"The Finance Minister Holds the Scalpel but Can’t Apply Proper Treatments"
Criticizing the Finance Minister, Maviş remarked, "The minister holds the scalpel but fails to provide proper treatments. Despite an 18 billion TL budget deficit, there is no intention to abandon lavish travel, ceremonies, or receptions. They increase the price of milk for citizens to maintain the comfort of ten ministers."
He called these policies unsustainable and reiterated the demand for an economist as the finance minister, stating, "We need solutions from experts, not misguided treatments."
Maviş also denounced the government’s economic policies, citing actions such as increasing and retracting VAT rates and implementing vehicle taxes only to revoke them under public pressure. "The public should not bear the cost of your indulgences," he said.
Addressing Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, Maviş questioned, "Why are you creating policies that favor the wealthy instead of the poor?" criticizing the government’s economic stance sharply.
